Their KDL42XBR950 Plasma WEGA High Definition Television carries that legacy forward with abilities like Enhanced Memory Stick Media Playback that allows you to enjoy JPEG images, MPEG1 movies and MP3 audio (stored on Memory Stick Media) via your high definition LCD TV with its sweet sound system. Two built-in NTSC TV tuners and a built-in ATSC TV tuner not only provide more entertainment options, they also open up additional opportunities for having fun with the KDL42XBR950's picture & picture (P&P) abilities. Sony's exclusive Multi Image Driver (MID X circuitry) enables you to scale the size of side-by-side P&P windows giving you a mastery over your entertainment that you don't get from other TVs (and the KDL42XBR950 comes with a really cool remote).

Sony LCD TV WEGA Engine Delivers superb picture quality from any video source by minimizing the signal deterioration caused by digital-to-analog conversion and stabilizing the signal processing. The first step in the digital processing system, Composite Component Processor2, which enhances input signal-to-noise ratio by chroma decoder digital processing.

Digital Reality Creation (DRC) Multifunction V1 Circuitry Unlike conventional line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal’s NTSC waveform with near-HD equivalent by digital mapping processing. The DRC Palette option lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity) to create a customized picture that is optimized for signal quality, viewing conditions and personal preference.

Multi Image Driver (MID-XU), when used with Sony's Twin-View 2 Tuner Picture-in-Picture, lets you watch 2 full motion pictures side by side. Together, Twin View tuner and Sony's proprietary Multi Image Driver X circuitry allows you to view analog along side of HDTV at the same time on the same screen. Also, with MID X both picture images are improved to 480 progressive image quality.

Newly Developed LCD Driver IC improves “afterimage” in motion pictures by improving the response time in the middle luminance range. Movement of images on the screen is much smoother.

Contrast Enhancer adaptive to brightness of scenes, automatically adjust backlight and contrast to appropriate level to improve picture reproduction in dark scenes.

CineMotion Reverse 3-2 Pull Down technology, the Cinemotion feature provides smoother picture movement when playing back movies or other video sources on film.

BN Smoother reduces the block noise caused by the digital video encoding and decoding process.

Convenience Features

ATSC Integrated Tuner allows the reception of local, off-air digital broadcasts providing the viewing of free, true high-definition network programming without the addition of a set top box or a monthly fee.

Twin View Using Multi-Image Driver (MID-X), Twin View allows you to watch two programs side by side with the ability to zoom in on one picture and listen to the program in the selected window. You can watch pictures from two different sources (1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i) simultaneously.

Wide Screen Mode allows you to watch 4:3 normal broadcasts in wide screen mode (16:9 aspect ratio).

Favorite Channel Preview allows you to preview up to sixteen favorite channels without leaving the current channel.

Parental Control (V-Chip) allows parents to block unsuitable programming from younger viewers.

Audio System Features

TruSurround & External Sound
In audio lingo the "sweet spot" is the zone where audio sounds its best. Most of the time this is not truly a sweet situation. Put an average system in a typical room and you may not have much of a sweet spot. Rather than rearrange the furniture or settle for sound that's less than it should be, you should turn an ear toward Sony's TruSurround system. TruSurround eliminates the need to sit in the sweet spot to enjoy the best sound. It generates the lifelike sound of rear speakers using only the KDL42XBR950's built-in stereo speakers. It's like getting a free pair of invisible speakers, so you can enjoy sweet sound from anywhere in the room and everyone gets a good seat. There is also an audio output that can be set for fixed or variable output, giving you the option of sending your television's audio to an external sound system and either controlling the volume through your receiver/amplifier (fixed output) or through your TV (variable output). You can also take advantage of the subwoofer output to connect a powered subwoofer and really add some power to your entertainment.
